Brown bread is so easy to make and is so much more delicious when it is homemade. You can also customise it to suit your own tastes, adding seeds, nuts, honey, orange juice etc. It’s a great one for kids to make too as the steps are simple and it produces a sufficiently sticky, messy dough that kids will love to stir and pour into the tin.

This is a recipe that we call “Mummy & S’s Brown Bread”. Through trial and error, we combined and altered other brown bread recipes until we came up with this one. We hope you love it as much as we do!!

Ingredients:

  • 100g plain white flour

  • 100g coarse wholemeal flour

  • 275g extra coarse wholemeal flour

  • 1 level tsp bread soda / baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 425ml buttermilk

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp greek yogurt / natural yogurt / sour cream

  • 1 tsp honey

  • Mixed seeds (for sprinkling on top)

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C (fan).

  2. Mix all the dry ingredients (except the seeds) together in a bowl.

  3. Whisk all the wet ingredients in a jug until mixed together.

  4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and pour in half of the wet mixture.

  5. Mix together adding the remainder of the wet mixture as it becomes stiff.

  6. You should be left with quite a wet dough in the bowl.

  7. Pour the dough into a lined loaf tin. Sprinkle with mixed seeds.

  8. Bake for approximately 50 mins or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
